Alberta Pet Charity Faces Funding Crisis
EDMONTON, July 27, 2017 /CNW/ - Another charitable organization in Alberta is feeling the pinch of a tight economy. Tails of Help is a charity that helps low income Albertans get essential veterinary care when their pet is sick or injured.
Since 2013, the demand for the program has increased every year. Tails of Help has helped over 375 Albertans in financial need pay for the treatment of their pets. Now, Tails of Help has run out of money.
Since 2013, Tails of Help has secured increasing support from individual donors, veterinary clinics, corporate sponsors, and grants, with contributions growing every year up until 2017. This year, Tails of Help has seen its contributions falter, and actually decline from last year, with so many corporations and individuals tightening their budgets to cope with current economic conditions in Alberta.
Tails of Help is working hard to keep more Alberta pets healthy and with their loving families. The need for this program has exceeded the charity's current capacity to fund it. Today, only five months into 2017, Tails of Help has allocated all of their available budget for the entire year. Effective immediately, Tails of Help is pausing the acceptance of applications to help pet owners in need.
Research shows that too many Albertans are forced to give up a family pet because they can't afford the animal's necessary health care. For many people, their pets are a significant or sometimes primary source of companionship, affection, and comfort. When financial hardship strikes, animals are often left untreated, suffering, surrendered to a shelter, even euthanized. Tails of Help aids in reducing the load on existing animal shelters and humane societies in Alberta, and fulfills an important gap in existing services.
