A legacy rallying residents together
Attractive and spectacular, parc Marie-Claire-Kirkland-Casgrain is an ideal place for stopping to rest while cycling or for admiring the magnificent panorama overlooking the St. Lawrence River and its shoreline. These new facilities include a waterfront promenade, a new and universally accessible lookout, rest areas, picnic grounds, interpretation panels on the history of the Aqueduc de Montréal and parking for 50 vehicles. The Route verte du Québec?one of the main cycling paths in Montréal?crosses through this park.

"The legacy of the 375th anniversary of our city, this beautiful promenade along the river that we are inaugurating today, is one of the legacies that comes within our desire to pass on to Montrealers not only infrastructures that they will be able to enjoy starting now, but which also follow up on our will to improve our metropolis in the interest of future generations," commented Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal.

"This place is truly an ideal escape from the hustle-bustle of the city and to enjoy an impressive view overlooking the river. Tracing our history, the interpretation panels serve as a reminder of how closely LaSalle is tied to the history of Montréal. We hope all residents will adopt this outstanding place," stated Borough Mayor Manon Barbe.

Ville de Montréal invested $1,095,000 from its three-year Capital Investment Program and the Borough of LaSalle, $441,000, for this 375th anniversary legacy.

New name for parc Marie-Claire-Kirkland-Casgrain
At its meeting on April 24, Montréal's City Council named this magnificent park along the river after Marie-Claire Kirkland-Casgrain, who passed away in March 2016. Mrs. Kirkland-Casgrain, who was trained as a lawyer, was the first woman elected Member of the National Assembly, the first woman in Cabinet and the first female judge in Québec. In 1964, she spearheaded the law putting an end to married women's legal incapacity. During all her years in provincial politics, she represented LaSalle residents, first as MNA for the Jacques-Cartier riding, and then for Marguerite-Bourgeoys.

"One year after her passing, the opportunity arose to honour this great lady by adding her name to Montréal's place names. We couldn't have dreamed of a better place to pay tribute to the memory of this exceptional woman who marked a whole generation by paving the way for women in politics and in the judiciary," added Mayor Manon Barbe in her closing remarks.
