Alternative EarthCare Discusses the Importance of Treating East End Properties to Prevent Asian Tiger Mosquito Bites

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y., June 21, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Alternative EarthCare has been providing quality residential and commercial services across Long Island, New York since 1996. Specializing in mosquito control, flea, and east end tick control services, traditional lawn services (including aeration and seeding), irrigation system services, tree removal and pruning, and Christmas and holiday light installation, the team of professionals successfully caters to your needs in the least toxic, most organic way possible.

Many mosquitoes transmit dangerous and potentially deadly diseases, and the Asian Tiger mosquito is at the top of the list of dangerous mosquitoes. Once thought of as a tropical mosquito, the Asian Tiger mosquito reared its ugly head on Long Island in 2004, and has been menacing residents ever since. Alternative EarthCare discusses the importance of treating properties to prevent Asian Tiger mosquito bites.

The Asian Tiger mosquito transmits several dangerous diseases such as the West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis here on Long Island, and diseases such as the Zika virus, dengue fever, and the chikungunya virus in more tropical climates. The West Nile virus can cause symptoms such as joint problems, severe headaches, body aches and weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and fatigue that can last for several months.  In severe cases, West Nile can cause neurologic issues including seizures, disorientation, paralysis, and even comas. In cases where a neurologic infection is present, there is an approximate 10% of cases that result in death. Eastern equine encephalitis, while it refers to equines in the name, can be extremely dangerous to humans. EEE, though rare, can cause issues such as inflammation of the brain, resulting in neurological issues as well, such as coma, seizures and permanent brain damage in survivors. More common symptoms consist of fevers, chills, vomiting, and headaches. EEE is one of the most severe mosquito-transmitted diseases, with a 33% mortality rate.

Long Islanders who travel this summer, especially if pregnant, should take extra care to prevent Asian Tiger mosquito bites by wearing repellants. When the Zika virus is contracted during pregnancy, it can be passed to the fetus, causing severe fetal brain defects and microcephaly in babies. While other mosquito-borne illnesses are limited to those bitten, once contracted, the Zika virus can be passed to through sexual contact as well.

The Asian Tiger mosquito, identified by black and white striped legs and body, is unique in its biting habits. While most mosquitoes will bite during the day but are most active during dawn and dusk, the Asian Tiger mosquito is equally active during daytime hours and is voracious in its appetite. This type of mosquito is extremely persistent and can attach to its victims with more strength than many other mosquito species.

Asian Tiger mosquitoes usually stay within a half mile of breeding grounds, meaning that eliminating breeding areas and obtaining property treatments is of utmost importance. Eliminate standing water on properties, such as in tires, buckets, garden urns, birdbaths, or anywhere water pools. Drilling a hole in the bottom of garbage and recycling cans can keep water from collecting at the bottom. The best preventative measures are to ensure that properties are treated by professionals to keep populations at bay. Obtain professional spray treatments every three to four weeks and before any outdoor event where people will gather.

Serving both Suffolk and Nassau County, including the East End and the Hamptons, Alternative EarthCare mosquito control company offers a variety of organic, non-toxic lawn care services for your home or business. In addition to beautifying and maintaining properties, the award-winning staff is also dedicated to the safety and health of their customers.
