Suspension Issued - Dr. Jun Yang

EDMONTON, June 20, 2017 /CNW/ - The Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) is the professional regulatory organization responsible for regulating the practice of veterinary medicine in the province of Alberta under the authority of the Veterinary Profession Act (VPA).

Alberta Veterinary Medical Assocation (CNW Group/Alberta Veterinary Medical Association)

The ABVMA acknowledges and recognizes the seriousness of the June 19, 2017, court decision that convicted Dr. Jun Yang under the Criminal Code and the Animal Protection Act.

Today, a suspension of Dr. Yang's registration to practice veterinary medicine has been issued by the Registrar in accordance with section 33 of the VPA, pending a hearing into the matter.

At the time of the initial charges, the public interest was protected by the court's imposition of conditions on Dr. Yang's access and ability to work with animals. The ABVMA continued to monitor the criminal charges pending its investigation.

The professional regulatory discipline process is separate and distinct from the criminal process. The ABVMA as the regulatory body will take the appropriate steps in accordance with the provisions of the VPA. The VPA mandates that finding(s) of unprofessional conduct and appropriate sanctions are ultimately the decision of a Hearing Tribunal.

Compassionate animal care is of the highest importance to the ABVMA, veterinarians, veterinary technologists and veterinary practice staff. The ABVMA expects all veterinarians and veterinary technologists to demonstrate leadership in animal welfare.
