Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations - Events for the month of May - Three major events planned to mark Montreal's anniversary week


MONTREAL, April 28, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - The month of May is set to be a memorable one as the celebrations marking the city's 375th anniversary continue. May 17 marks the official date that Montreal turns 375, and to mark the occasion a number of special events are planned, most notably the illumination of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, the launch of the AVUDO show and a visit from the Giants from May 19 through the 21. Also kicking off on May 12 is La Grande Tournée, a signature event that will tour each of the city's 19 boroughs over the course of 19 different weekends. These events are not to be missed!

The short video blog ? Pierr-Rox 3.75 ? seeks to document the history, nature, society and culture of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough through the lens of its very own inhabitants. The project begins by inviting people from all backgrounds ? young and old from the west, east, and central areas of Pierrefonds-Roxboro ? to create works that will serve as starting points for the documentary blog. The Pierr-Rox 3.75 project will be directed by Cloverdale Multi-Ressources.

Appetizers
This unique event is sure to make people smile! Everyday manholes will be transformed into sites of creative expression ? all in a fun and collaborative atmosphere. On the menu: live painting, theatre, music, a circus and puppetry. A street art project will also bring together artists, organizations and neighborhood schools. APPETIZERS will feature temporary manhole murals and short, 375 second performances that came out of mediation workshops and which will be presented along a series of selected manholes.

Free Space for Culture 375
Free Space for Culture will temporarily occupy a vacant lot located at the corner of Notre-Dame and D'Orléans streets to transform it into artist residencies during the year 2017 for a total of four artistic residencies of two months each. Each residency explores a season and the history of the neighbourhood. We are offering a special one-year edition to celebrate Montreal's 375th anniversary that promises to be more colorful and festive than ever!

Montréal, toute une histoire
An engaging and historical tour that takes participants on a journey along the Saint-Lawrence River between the Maison Saint-Gabriel and the Lachine Museum with the help of a free mobile app, a game, and a series of outdoor panels. Close to 50 places of interest have already been identified on the route, totalling 17 km in length. This route will be divided into different sections for those wishing to explore the course on foot and or by bike but don't necessarily want to travel the whole length of the trail. Two approaches will be proposed for the path: one that is more informative, cultural and historical with audio clips and photos accessible to all, and the second ? ideal for families ? involves a playful quest.

Where will Montreal take you?
This creative project brings together seven authors and three photographers with the mission of travelling to seven neighbourhoods in an effort to reinvigorate our perceptions of a modern and ever-changing Montreal. Using their urban travel notebooks, these tourist-artists will be tasked with creating a piece that situates itself somewhere between fiction and documentary. Subject matter will be presented in the form of notes, songs, collected conversations and invented stories: open and engaging storytelling is what is sought-after.

Streets of Montreal
The Streets of Montreal project aims to tell the story of eight historic locations in Rosemont?La Petite-Patrie and five in the Plateau-Mont-Royal. There will be an outdoor exhibit which will run from May through to October, and a free online publication available throughout 2017. Thirteen Montreal comic authors will take on the task of making you rediscover the history of each of the featured districts. This project is brought to you by the PLANCHES magazine and the Montreal Comic Arts Festival.

Vivre ensemble : Montréal, nouveau monde

Flashmob in your neighborhood

A blank page is the beginning of all creation! It is represented here by an outdoor public space that will serve as a meeting spot for artists and residents who will share a moment of reflection and make a creative gesture together. Photography, painting, dance, literature or music ? there's a place on the page for all forms of art! Meetings with residents will serve as a source of inspiration for 20 guest artists whose final works will be presented at an event celebrating these unique encounters. Every Saturday in May through October two locations in the borough will host BLANK PAGE ? one in the morning and in the evening ? with different artists attending each one. Kitchen Parties ? presented by When Art Takes Action ? features an art project made possible through the collaboration of various communities that have fled oppression and which now call Montreal, and its surrounding suburbs, home. Montréal AVUDO
Montréal AVUDO ? a spectacular show that pays tribute to the Saint-Lawrence River ? will come to life with enormous projections inspired the city's history. Get ready to travel back in time! ScaveNDGers
The ScaveNDGers project is divided into three separate events. "Marathon" participants will take part in a week-long mission to accomplish creative and engaging community-oriented tasks. "Sprint" participants will take part in a one-day race to complete smaller tasks throughout the NDG area. The entire community will then have the opportunity to interact with a temporary exhibit at the NDG Cultural Centre that will showcase the completed tasks in the form of photographs, videos, and artwork.

Franchir un mur pour construire des ponts
This collaboration between the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT), the Commission scolaire de Montréal and MU will celebrate Montreal's 375th anniversary by hosting a block party at Pierre-Dupuy High School as well as through a series of video and mural art workshops. Festival jeunesse-Active ta couleur ? Part 1
On May 24, 25 and 26, Francophone and Anglophone high school students from Saint-Leonard will run the distance between Quebec City and Montreal on the Chemin du Roy. When they finally reach Saint-Leonard, elementary school students will join them to run the remaining kilometers. Upon their arrival, music and festivities will take place at the rendez-vous.

Symphony for Montréal

La guirlande du 375e ? Accrochage
Creative workshops will be held at Centre culturel Georges-Vanier as part of the event La guirlande du 375. Le Carrefour d'éducation populaire de Pointe-Saint-Charles (P-S-C) is offering the creation and collective decoration of a 1,400m-long garland that will dress the streets of the P-S-C neighbourhood. Several workshops on various techniques of painting and printing on canvas will be offered in different places of the district in a creative atmosphere where the participants will be able to develop their artistic talents. The garland will be hung in the neighbourhood during a vernissage gathering during the Montreal's 375th anniversary.
