Fish & Richardson Wins "Case of the Year" Award and "U.S. Specialty IP Firm of the Year" Award by Managing Intellectual Property

BOSTON, March 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Fish & Richardson today announced that it has received the 2017 "Case of the Year" award for its groundbreaking U.S. Supreme Court win for Halo Electronics in Halo Electronics, Inc. v. Pulse Electronics, Inc. and the "U.S. Specialty IP Firm of the Year" award from Managing Intellectual Property (MIP).  This is the second year in a row that Fish has received the "Case of the Year" award from MIP

Fish obtained the Supreme Court victory for Halo in June 2016 after a nine-year patent litigation fight with Pulse Electronics, Inc.  The Supreme Court ruled, in a unanimous decision, that the current legal test for increased damages was not consistent with Section 284 of the Patent Act.  The decision makes it easier for courts to award enhanced damages in cases of egregious behavior by the infringer.  Fish and Halo are now asking a Nevada federal judge to treble the $1.5 million they obtained against Pulse in 2013.

John Dragseth, Michael Kane, and William Woodford, who led the Halo litigation with Craig Countryman, attended the tenth annual MIP North America awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 23, 2017 and accepted the awards on behalf of the firm.  Dragseth was also selected as the "Outstanding Litigator in Minnesota" at the event.

Fish was also named to MIP's shortlist in the International Trade Commission, Patent Litigation, Patent Prosecution, Patent Trial & Appeal Board, Appellate, Patent Prosecution Northeast, and Patent Prosecution West categories.  Fish principals Ruffin Cordell (D.C.), Douglas McCann (Delaware), Mark Puzella (Massachusetts), Karl Renner (PTAB), and Jonathan Singer (Minnesota) were on shortlists as "Outstanding Litigators" in their respective states or categories as well.

Founded in 1990, MIP is an international magazine for in-house IP counsel and a leading source of news and analysis on all IP developments worldwide.  MIP's North America awards are the result of more than six months of analysis by its team of researchers, who conduct hundreds of interviews with IP practitioners and IP owners in North America.
