States Jettison Some Tests, but They Hold on to Measuring Student Progress According to Simba Information

STAMFORD, Conn., March 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The backlash against Common Core testing requirements in schools has unleashed a flurry of activity in states, which are re-examining what they want students to learn and how to measure how well students have mastered their lessons.

PreK-12 Testing Market Forecast 2016-2017, the most recent market analysis from Simba Information on current trends in education, looks at the issues at the local district, state and federal policy levels that are driving change to the estimated $2.59 billion school testing market.

While school districts and states are cutting specific tests and reducing the amount of classroom time devoted to students taking high-stakes tests, the report found that measuring student progress and using advances in assessment techniques to foster leaning achievement remain important goals among educators.

The big growth area in the market is online, as states move closer to 100% online assessment delivery, particularly in English language arts and mathematics. Simba estimates that total online testing exceeded $1.4 billion in 2015-2016, with the bulk of that testing?or 57.7%?occurring in statewide high-stakes testing.

Overall, however, classroom assessment?the day-to-day measurement of how students are progressing online or with paper and pencil?accounts for a greater portion, or 54.6%, of the overall testing market.

The new Simba report looks at the competitive landscape in testing, identifies 25 of the leading providers of testing, and the drivers of future growth, including the impact of new science standards, and the uptake of adaptive and performance  assessment s.

Simba projects overall growth in the PreK-12 testing market will be modest, under 2% a year, but that real momentum over the next several years will come with the implementation of more online testing and the embedding of assessment in the learning process.
