Slam Season Heats Up: Young Poets To Battle At The Nourse Theater; The Grand Slam Finals of the 21st Annual Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam

SAN FRANCISCO, March 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Hope is the last thing you have when there is nothing left." Nashdelly. Slam Season heats up in the San Francisco Bay Area as 12 Bay Area teens take the stage at the Grand Slam Finals of the 21st Annual Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam to be held at the Nourse Theater on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Hundreds of Bay Area youth (13-19) competed to be one of 12 finalists in an Olympic-style championship on stages in Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco.

On April 8, 12 finalists will take the stage, and one young poet will win the honor of being named the 2017 Youth Speaks Grand Slam Champion. A team of six will go on to represent the Bay Area at Youth Speaks' 20th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival, taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area (July 19-22, 2017).

In 1997, Youth Speaks hosted its first ever poetry slam for teenagers, not knowing that it was only the beginning of what would become a global movement. Throughout the last 21 years, hundreds of thousands of young people have stepped to the mic to tell their stories. When #AlternativeFacts replace truth, poets possess the power to pierce through the propaganda.

Youth Speaks is the country's leading spoken word and literary arts organization for young people, providing direct services to thousands of youth each year, investing in developing a network of educators and nonprofit organizations, presenting a new generation of artistic voices in theater and spoken word, developing national media campaigns, and playing an advocacy role to elevate the voices and stories of young people.
