Classification of Maison Alcan and surrounding complex - Combining heritage protection and urban development

MONTREAL, Feb. 23, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - Lune Rouge welcomes the decision by Luc Fortin, Quebec Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister Responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language, to grant heritage classification status to La Maison-Alcan and its surrounding complex, pursuant to Quebec's Cultural Heritage Act. Lune Rouge hails the minister's leadership on this issue and the collaboration of multiple stakeholders, including the City of Montreal, Heritage Montreal, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, and thanks the Institut de développement urbain du Québec for its support.

Guy Laliberté, who founded Lune Rouge 18 months ago, says: "My goal is to promote innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in the areas of technology, the arts, entertainment and real estate, as well as in initiatives that aim for positive social impact. La Maison-Alcan and its surrounding complex fit perfectly into that global vision, and for that reason I am pleased with today's announcement." In Lune Rouge's view, the classification secured in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Communications speaks to the importance of keeping built heritage alive, while providing the impetus for a better future.

Progress on this matter was marked by inclusive, constructive dialogue, which stimulated co-creation of solutions that combine heritage protection and urban development. Dialogue with the community is ongoing, notably with leading voices in the fields of architecture and heritage conservation.

Le Complexe-de-la-Maison-Alcan is located in downtown Montreal on the block bounded by Sherbrooke Street West, Stanley Street, De Maisonneuve Boulevard and Drummond Street, near McGill and Concordia universities, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and several tourist attractions. The complex includes a group of seven buildings and an atrium. Lune Rouge's headquarters will be moving to the complex.
